Saint-Hyacinthe: Design of a Fish Habitat Compensation Development

The Ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité durable et de l’Électrification des transports (MTMDET) wanted to develop a fish habitat to compensate for the negative impacts of rebuilding two bridges in the Saint-Hyacinthe region. Groupe DDM was asked to identify a potential watercourse and site for the project, and to design a compensation development for fish habitat on a stretch of the Mercier Stream.

The proposed concept was for a 477.5 m2 fish habitat under the natural high water mark, in a flood plain located upstream of two newly developed sills. Aquatic and semi-aquatic vegetation was planted to provide suitable spawning conditions for Northern pike (Esox lucius). Waterside areas were developed on both sides of the watercourse, and other wildlife habitat developments (stone and branch shelters, nesting boxes, artificial chimneys, etc.) were added to address the issue of biodiversity and enhance the project. Overall, the project has been instrumental in creating a new wildlife corridor.
