Study on the evolution of labour and training needs in the food processing industry

Within the framework of the Study on the evolution of labour and training needs in the food processing industry, the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur (MEES), in collaboration with the Ministère de l'Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l'Alimentation, wished to document the problems and issues faced by the food processing industry as well as their effects on labour and training needs.

The realization of this study was entrusted to Groupe DDM. The mandate was divided into four main steps:

  • Literature review
  • Digital survey of educational institutions
  • Interviews with employers and industry experts
  • Major findings and possible solutions

Ultimately, the goal of this mandate was to provide the MEES with a complete portrait of the situation in the food processing industry with regard to the training offer and workforce needs, for all sectors (animal feed manufacturing, cereal grain milling, sugar and confectionery manufacturing, dairy product manufacturing, etc.) and administrative regions. The report concluded with the development of possible solutions to be implemented. The main findings of the study indicate that the food processing industry is growing, but that the pool of skilled workers is insufficient. Industry players anticipate an acceleration in the automation of operations.
